Guide

DIY when safe. Hire smarter when not.

Structured, homeowner-safe instructions — but only when the task is genuinely DIY-able. The route is built to say no.

When to use this guide

  • The task is low risk and non-permitted.
  • No licensed trade is required in your jurisdiction.
  • The manufacturer instructions for your specific model don’t contradict the steps.
  • You have the tools, materials, and physical ability — and a clear stop condition for “this got harder than I expected.”

When not to use this guide

  • Gas, refrigerant, structural, or load-bearing work.
  • Electrical work beyond resetting a breaker, replacing a like-for-like switch/outlet, or changing a fixture (and only if you’re sure power is off).
  • Anything requiring a permit, inspection, or licensed trade.
  • Work above arm’s reach without a stable platform — falls cause the most homeowner injuries.

What the route will ask

  1. 01
The task you want to do

“Replace the kitchen faucet” — specific is better than “fix the sink.”

  2. 02
Brand / model of the existing fixture or appliance
  3. 03
Photos of the connection points and surrounding access
  4. 04
    Your skill / tool level

Observe only / simple DIY / tools okay.

  5. 05
    Your jurisdiction

City + state; permits and licensing vary.

What happens, step by step

  1. 01
Confirm the task is appropriate for DIY in your jurisdiction.
  2. 02
List the tools and materials required, with specifications.
  3. 03
List prep steps — shut off water, power, gas; cover surfaces; set up lighting.
  4. 04
List safety checks before starting (e.g. test the circuit is off with a non-contact tester).
  5. 05
Walk the steps in order, with explicit checkpoints (“Stop and verify X before continuing”).
  6. 06
Call out stop conditions — when to halt and call a pro instead.
  7. 07
    Cleanup + verify functionality.
  8. 08
Document what you did (photo + date) for future maintenance.
